Relator Gwen Thrower hired Reese Marketos to serve as lead counsel in a declined False Claims Act qui tam action in the Northern District of California. Reese Marketos partnered with Thomas & Solomon LLP from Rochester, New York to prosecute the case. The case, styled United States of America ex rel. Gwen Thrower v. Academy Mortgage Corporation, is notable because the United States Government moved to dismiss the action while the case was in its infancy. The Court denied the Government’s motion, and Relator persisted. Years later, the case settled just before trial. On December 14, 2022, the Department of Justice announced that Relator will receive $11.5 million for her efforts in recovering a $38.5 million settlement for the taxpayers.
